My Favorite Color

I didn’t learn the rules of male/female acceptable gift giving til I was 12. At age 12 I learned that a gentleman could give me candy, flowers or books but never an article of clothing or jewelry. Certainly nothing expensive.

I received gifts from boys as a girl.

Handpicked roses from their grandmother’s garden
Chocolate [...]

Stick Him, Mary Ann

I grew up in a really small town. If you became sick, you went to the Doctor’s Building and saw either Dr. Hicks or Dr. Lumsden. My brother and I always saw Dr. Hicks.

Dr. L.G. Hicks was a General Practitioner and cared for patients of all ages. Also, Dr. Hicks [...]

Button Friday: PacMan

It’s Friday!

Friday’s are BUTTON Friday’s here at Mean Marie.

Let’s go look into Mama’s Button Bowl.

Can’t wait to see what we pull out of this bowl today!

*plunges hand into bowl*

A HA!

How. Unusual.

Wait.

Wait.

It looks sorta like an albino PacMan.

Albino PacMan

PacMan

I can TOTALLY work with that!

I played PacMan once.

I was never rich enough to go [...]

The Valley: No! Not THAT Valley

I grew up just outside of Helen, GA.. Separating me and Helen was The Valley. The Valley is not THAT Valley. It’s the Sautee Nacoochee Valley. Two valleys actually although I consider them one.

You can click Sautee Nacoochee to read the Wiki page about Sautee Nacoohcee. The [...]

Helen, GA

I grew up just outside of Helen, GA.

Yes.

It’s a Bavarian village in the foothills of Appalachia.

Yes.

It’s Not Natural.

Much like myself.

Helen is an awful tourist trap.

Luckily, I like tourist traps. When they are out of season. I’m a weirdo about crowds. Ok. Fine. I’m just a weirdo.

Helen has a balloon race.

One [...]

Mean Marie Remembers Laura Ashley

So. I’m not actually remembering the designer Laura Ashley. I’m remembering her clothes. I wore Laura Ashley almost exclusively in the 80′s. If I wasn’t wearing a Laura Ashley ensemble I was wearing an ensemble made from a Laura Ashley pattern.

My college roommate, Kim, visited me this week. She had 3 [...]

BabyLand General: Cabbage Patch Kids

I received my first Little People Originals ‘baby’ in 1979. In 1982 a deal was struck with a major toy manufacturer to mass produce a toy version of the Little People Originals. The toy version was called Cabbage Patch Kids and the Little People Originals were re-named Original Cabbage Patch Kids.

Today an Original [...]

Tribute: Granny Pig

My mama was very close to her mama. Mama called her mother, Mother Fig. Mother Fig is short for Mother Figure.

Aunt Bobbie (Mama’s older sister) took care of my mother when she was a baby and small child. Aunt Bobbie would teasingly tell Mama, “I’m your real mother, she’s just your [...]

Little Red Riding Hood

When I was 5 my favorite story was Little Red Riding Hood. That winter I wanted to be Little Red Riding Hood. I wanted a cape. Not just any cape. I wanted a Little Red Riding Hood cape. I insisted it be red, wool and have a hood! Mama has always aided [...]

Raspberries on the Cookstove

Mama has a million raspberry bushes. Like. Seriously. She has too many raspberry bushes to count.

Raspberries are in season right now.

Mama got up in the wee hours to pick this bucket full.

Delicious looking huh? Feel free to click on these pictures for a closer look. Go ahead. [...]
